Methodology

Firstly, this white balance plug-in uses the same logic as DxO. It may be intuitive to try it out here and then run your own tests to see if you agree with it.

It detects the white balance by looking at all your white pixels (or grey pixels)
It measures the gray (or white) in all pixels of the picture
It measures the differences between white and grey in all the pixels
It keeps one pixel with the biggest difference

It does this using a set of 8 8-bit linear filters that work in 8 different ways. Theoretically, the more filters you use, the more accurate the algorithm. However, the more filters you use, the slower it is. And to balance those two, some filters are more efficient than others. For these reasons I did not include any more than 8 filters. I guess I could have used more but I didn't want to overload the algorithm (at this point, I can only use one or two cores on my computer).

DxO uses a slightly different methodology:

It measures the color of all your pixels and stores them.
It compares all the white pixels to the darkest pixel in the picture
It takes the difference between white and darkest pixel
It is then applied to all the pixels of the picture

In the end, if you agree with the algorithm, it means that it will have good results at any settings. If you don't agree with the algorithm, it can still work in a similar way but the results will be different.

At the end of the day, it's not how much you can fix, it's how much you can fix it.
If you have a high-contrast image with many different shades of grey, you'll need to spend a little time on it. If the image is very flat or has lots of white or black areas, it's easier.
